French Philosopher, Joseph De
Maistre was born on this date, 1 April 1753. He would have been 260 years old
if he was alive today. In loving memory of him, I will post two Pro-Death
Penalty quotes from him.
QUOTE
1: “All grandeur, all power, and all
subordination to authority rests on the executioner: he is the horror and the
bond of human association. Remove this incomprehensible agent from the world and
at that very moment order gives way to chaos, thrones topple and society
disappears.” [The Works of Joseph de Maistre, ed.
Jack Lively (1965). The Count, in Les Soirées de Saint-Pétersbourg, "First
Dialogue," (1821).]
QUOTE
2:
All pain is a punishment, and every punishment is
inflicted for love as much as for justice.
AUTHOR: Joseph-Marie, comte de Maistre (1 April 1753 – 26 February 1821) was a
French-speaking Savoyard lawyer, diplomat, writer, and philosopher. He was one
of the most influential spokesmen for hierarchical authoritarianism in the
period immediately following the French Revolution of 1789.
